In botany, a perennial plant or simply perennial is a plant that lives more than two years. The term is often used to differentiate a plant from shorter-lived annuals and biennials. 

These plants generally die back to below ground level in winter then emerge the following spring. Sometimes in harsh winters if the plants have no protection they can fail to emerge the year after.
